The term superbugs, or multidrug-resistant bacteria, refers to antimicrobial resistance, which is characterized by the ability of these pathogens to resist the effects of drugs , which are no longer effective. This problem occurs when bacteria are repeatedly exposed to drugs due to the indiscriminate use of medications. (ANVISA, 2022)
Because of this, the World Health Organization (WHO) considers multidrug-resistant bacteria to be one of the most dangerous risks to public health for the world's population. This is justified, as the WHO estimates that, if measures are not implemented, one person every 3 seconds will die by 2050 because of superbugs. Furthermore, the financial loss would be 100 trillion dollars . (ANVISA, 2022)
